Charles D. Baker President and Chief Executive Officer Harvard Pilgrim Health Care
In 1999, Charlie Baker was brought in as CEO to turn around the financial performance of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Inc., one of New England’s leading non-profit health plans. Harvard Pilgrim lost $227 million in 1999, but generated a $44 million net gain in 2002, and a $44 million net gain in 2003; it has generated positive financial returns for 16 quarters in a row. Previously, Mr. Baker was President and CEO of Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, a non-profit, multi-specialty group practice. Prior to that, he spent eight years in Massachusetts state government, where he served as Secretary of Administration and Finance and Secretary of Health and Human Services. He currently chairs the Massachusetts Association of Health Plans. Mr. Baker received a Master's Degree in Management from Northwestern’s Kellogg School, and a BA in English from Harvard College.

Richard M.J. Bohmer, MD, MPH Assistant Professor, Technology and Operations Management Harvard Business School
Having joined the Harvard Business School faculty in 1997, Richard Bohmer teaches health care operations and conducts research into issues of health care management. His research interests are technology adoption in health care, clinical process management, and clinical quality improvement. With two other TOM faculty members, Dr. Bohmer recently undertook a large multi-site project to evaluate the determinants of learning during the introduction of new surgical technology into cardiac surgical departments, and is currently applying insights from this work to a study of process innovation in health care. Previously, he was the Clinical Director of Quality Improvement at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Bohmer trained at the Auckland University School of Medicine in Family Medicine, and attended the Harvard School of Public Health on a Fulbright Scholarship, graduating with an MPH in Health Care Management.

Clayton M. Christensen, PhD Professor, Technology and Operations Management Harvard Business School
Clayton Christensen is the Robert and Jane Cizik Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. His research and writing interests center on the management of technological innovation, developing organizational capabilities, and finding new markets for new technologies. The Innovator’s Dilemma: When New Technologies Cause Great Firms to Fail won the 1997 Global Business Book Award. Prior to joining the HBS faculty, Professor Christensen was a White House Fellow and former assistant to US Transportation Secretaries Drew Lewis and Elizabeth Dole. He holds a BA with highest honors in economics from Brigham Young University, and an MPhil in applied econometrics and the economics of less-developed countries from Oxford University, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. As a George F. Baker Scholar, he received an MBA with High Distinction and his DBA from the Harvard Business School.

Kim B. Clark, PhD Dean of the Faculty and George F. Baker Professor of Administration Harvard Business School
A member of the Harvard faculty since 1978, Professor Clark's research is focused on modularity in design and the integration of technology and competition in industry evolution, with a particular focus on the computer industry. He co-authored a book on the topic entitled Design Rules: The Power of Modularity. Earlier research focused on the areas of technology, productivity, product development, and operations strategy, with publications including Leading Product Development: The Senior Manager's Guide to Creating and Shaping the Enterprise. Professor Clark also co-authored Product Development Performance, a comprehensive study on product development in the world auto industry. His articles have also appeared in Harvard Business Review, California Management Review, and Journal of Applied Corporate Finance. Professor Clark received his BA, MA, and PhD degrees in economics from Harvard University.

David Cutler, PhD Professor of Economics and Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts and Sciences for Social Sciences Harvard University
David Cutler’s research focuses on the economics of health care. He served as Senior Staff Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers and Director of the National Economic Council. Professor Cutler was primarily involved in drafting the Clinton Administration's health care reform proposal. He also served on several government advisory panels, including groups at the National Institutes of Health, the Social Security Administration, and the Health Care Financing Administration. Currently, Professor Cutler is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a member of the Institute of Medicine, and the author of Your Money Of Your Life: Strong Medicine for America’s Health Care System. He is associate editor of the Journal of Public Economics and the Journal of Economic Perspectives. Professor Cutler received his BA in Economics from Harvard and his PhD in Economics from MIT.

Robert A. DeNoble Principal RDA Healthcare Consulting, Inc.
Bob DeNoble has over 20 years experience as a senior executive at health care institutions and as a health care management consultant. He has assisted many health provider organizations in determining financial feasibility of capital projects and obtaining debt financing. Prior to founding RDA Healthcare Consulting, Mr. DeNoble had held senior positions with KPMG LLP, Rhode Island Hospital, and McLean Hospital. He serves on the Board of Trustees and chairs the Finance Committee of the Austen Riggs Center, a comprehensive mental health institution; he is also a member of the Board of Germaine Lawrence, Inc., a community based residential program for emotional disturbed adolescent girls. A founding director of the Harvard Business School Health Industry Alumni Association, he has served as Chair of the Annual Healthcare Conference since 2000. Mr. DeNoble received his MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Geoffrey Duyk, MD, PhD Managing Director TPG Ventures
In 2004, Geoff Duyk joined TPG Ventures, a VC firm which catalyzes the creation of new businesses in IT and biotechnology. Previously, as President of R&D at Exelixis, he led a 550+ person group focused on discovery and development of small molecule therapeutics. Prior, as one of the founding scientific staff at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Dr. Duyk was responsible for building and leading the informatics, automation, DNA sequencing and genotyping, and mouse and human genetics groups. He was also Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, and Assistant Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, where he was Co-Principal Investigator in the NIH-funded Cooperative Human Linkage Center. Dr. Duyk serves on many NIH panels and oversight committees focused on the human genome project. He holds a PhD and MD from Case Western Reserve and completed his medical and fellowship training at UCSF.

Beatrice Ellerin Executive Director PPD, Inc.
Beatrice Ellerin, known as Bunny, is Executive Director of PPD, Inc., responsible for online marketing and physician education. Previously, as Vice President at Vivra Specialty Partners, she managed risk contracts and clinical data reporting for 14 single specialty networks. Prior to that, she directed operations of physician-led IPAs at AHT Corporation, a clinical information systems and healthcare e-commerce company. She also led the development of an oncology IPA for Caremark International. Ms. Ellerin is President and Founder of the Harvard Business School Health Industry Alumni Association, an international organization which brings together thought leaders in all sectors of the healthcare world. She received a BA in Political Science from Columbia University and an MBA from Harvard.

Robert S. Galvin, MD Director, Global Health Care General Electric Company
Bob Galvin oversees the design and performance of GE's health programs, which total over $3 billion annually, and is responsible for GE's medical services, encompassing over 220 medical clinics in 20+ countries. Dr. Galvin focuses on issues of market-based health policy and financing, with a special interest in quality measurement/ improvement. He has been a leader in applying Six Sigma to health care and pushing for public release of performance information and reform of the payment system. He is a founder and current Board Chair of The Leapfrog Group, a member of the Advisory Board of the Council of Health Care Economics, and the new IOM Committee on Redesigning Health Insurance Benefits, Payments and Performance Improvement Programs. He is also an Associate Professor Adjunct at Yale. Dr. Galvin received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania, and his MBA in health care management from Boston University.

Wolfgang Klietmann, MD President and Medical Director Mediconsulting, Inc.
Wolfgang Klietmann is a clinical pathologist, medical microbiologist, and an appointed lecturer at Harvard Medical School. Previously on staff of the Department of Pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, he also performed research work as an Associate Scientist at the Wistar Institute of the University of Pennsylvania, headed a research group at the Max-Planck-Institute for Virus Research, and served on the medical faculty of the University of Tuebingen. Dr. Klietmann was Founder and Physician-in-Chief of a leading Institute of Laboratory Medicine in Germany. During his professional career he has evaluated the efficacy of several major vaccines and with MIT has performed work in biodefense for the DoD. A member of the scientific advisory board of BioCal Technology, Dr. Klietmann also serves on the board of the Harvard Business School Health Industry Alumni Association and has co-chaired several of its conferences.

Gail Maderis President and Chief Executive Officer FivePrime Therapeutics, Inc.
In July 2003 Gail Maderis joined FivePrime Therapeutics, a drug discovery and development company primarily focused on therapeutic proteins. Prior, Ms. Maderis spent 11 years at Genzyme Corporation in various business development and general management positions. There she founded and served as president of Genzyme Molecular Oncology, a publicly-traded tracking stock division involved in discovery and development of novel cancer therapies, and was appointed a corporate vice president of Genzyme Corporation. Prior, Ms. Maderis had practiced management and strategy consulting with Bain & Co., Inc., and served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Canadian Medical Discoveries Fund and a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Pharma Forum. Ms. Maderis received a BS degree in business from the University of California at Berkeley and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Christopher Murray, MD, PhD Director, Global Health Initiative Harvard University
Christopher Murray directs the Harvard University Global Health Initiative, a University-wide effort to serve as the nexus for interdisciplinary and inter-school activities aimed at scientific, economic, social, and ethical problems associated with health problems throughout the world. Prior, Dr. Murray was Executive Director of the Evidence and Information for Policy Cluster at the World Health Organization. A physician and health economist, his early work focused on tuberculosis control and pioneering the Global Burden of Disease project at Harvard. He recently initiated major new approaches to measuring population health, cost-effectiveness analysis, and the conceptualization and national application of health systems performance assessment. He has authored or edited seven books, and more than 90 journal articles in international publications. Dr. Murray received the DPhil degree from Oxford University, and an MD from Harvard.

Gary P. Pisano, Ph.D. Professor, Technology and Operations Management Harvard Business School
Gary Pisano is the Harry E. Figgie, Jr., Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. Since joining the Harvard faculty in 1988, he has taught both MBA and executive-level courses. For the past 15 years, Professor Pisano’s research has focused heavily on organizations in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and health care. The author of over 25 published research papers, he is also author of The Development Factory, a book focusing on superior development performance in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals; and is the recent co-author of Operations, Strategy, and Technology: Pursuing the Competitive Edge. Professor Pisano has served as an advisor to senior managers at several major firms, assisting in creating business and technology strategies and in improving product development performance. He holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BA in economics from Yale.

Stephen F. Wiggins Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer HealthMarket, Inc.
Steve Wiggins is Founder of HealthMarket, a leading provider of consumer-driven health plans to small and mid-size companies. Previously, Mr. Wiggins was Chairman and CEO of Oxford Health Plan; under his leadership, Oxford grew to $5 billion in annual revenue. He co-founded Health Partners, a physician practice management company that grew to $150 million of annual revenue before it was sold. Mr. Wiggins is a principal co-Founder and Director of Intelliclaim, a provider of claim auditing and productivity software; BenefitPort, one of the nation's largest health insurance sales organizations; and IPXray, an Internet security firm. He also founded Accessible Space, an NPO that develops and operates residential facilities for individuals with mobility impairments and brain injuries. Marta Wosinska, PhD Assistant Professor Harvard Business School
Marta Wosinska is an Assistant Professor of Business Administration in the Marketing unit at the Harvard Business School, where she teaches the required first-year MBA course in marketing. Dr. Wosinksa’s research focuses on category expansion effects of advertising and their implications for firm strategy. Her related work on direct-to-consumer advertising and direct-to-physician promotions has been received with considerable interest by pharmaceutical manufacturers, health insurance companies, and governmental agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission. Dr. Wosinska holds a BS degree from Arizona State University, and received her PhD in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to starting her graduate studies, she worked as a sales and customer service representative for a firm offering foreign language training to large corporate clients.
